  • Kitchen Remodel

A few weeks ago we decided to tackle a major project in our kitchen. The cabinets are old 80's cabinets and are not very pretty. I have been wanting to do something with them ever since we moved in, but a kitchen remodel is no where in our near future. So instead we painted the cupboards.

Here are some before and after photos:

    Before:

    Before: UGLY!!!!!

Brian added new molding along the ceiling

Showing the contrast between the painted cupboards and the unpainted door. Also shows the trim Brian added to the door.

    After: I love it!!!!

    Love it!

Have I mentioned that I love it?

Brian did anything requiring tools and I did the painting. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it!

  • Lincoln's 1st Birthday

Two days after Brian's birthday we celebrated Lincoln's First Birthday.

I can't believe it was a whole year ago. He has grown a little since then.

I took advantage of the nice weather and took some pictures of the kids in our yard.

Opening presents with a little help.

The boat cake that I made...

and a fish to go with it.

We were trying to get a picture of him with his cakes, but he was more interested in eating the cake.

    He loved the cake!
Audrey made the extra letters for Lincoln.

    Yummmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carter was a good big brother and tried to clean him up a little.

Here are a couple of videos of Lincoln eating his cake.

  • Brian's Birthday

Last week we celebrated Brian's birthday. I am sure he won't mind me telling you that he is now 33!!!!! Yup, I am married to an old man. Ok, not really, but that is what I like to tell him.

For fun here is a picture of him at age 6.  Wasn't he cute???

    Happy Birthday Brian!

    Blowing out ALL those candles.

Audrey helped make the sign and all the kids drew pictures for Daddy.

Finally, just because I can, and to show you one fashion trend that I really hope never comes back here is another picture of Brian as a child. (He is the younger, blonde one)

Feel free to laugh. Loudly. I do.
The only thing missing is the gold chain.

  • The Tale of An Oven

I am not much of a baker. Mostly I do holiday baking, sweet rolls for Deer Season and Christmas, strawberry pies for the couple weeks they are in season, and Hot Cross Buns for Easter. So I made big plans to get some baking done while my parents were here the weekend before Easter. Mom and I had planned on spending a day working on Hot Cross Buns, bread, and whatever else sounded good that day.

We didn't get started quite as early as we would have liked that Saturday. Taking care of kids (and Grandma cuddling with the kids) along with talking and catching up took up most of our morning, suddenly it was afternoon and we had lunch to get and all our baking to be done.

While I got lunch going mom started mixing the dough for the Hot Cross Buns. I put potatoes in the oven and waited, and waited, and waited. They were sure taking a long time to cook. Opening the oven, I felt heat come to meet me, so I closed the door and waited some more. Wow, they still were not done yet! Wait a minute, shouldn't that bottom element be red from the heat?  That's right, the element was burnt out. We turned the broiler on and ended up with potatoes that were still slightly raw, and very well done on top.

Now what to do? There is no way we could bake the hot cross buns now! A quick call to the neighbors and we discovered they were not home. Another quick call, "pretty please can we borrow your oven?" and we had a plan. We raced out the door with our rapidly rising dough. As I drove, mom sat in the passenger seat forming the dough into rolls, it was growing and growing! Every time I turned a corner the rolls would slide across the greased sheet pan. Finally we arrived at our destination and were able to cook our rolls, which turned out beautifully, despite the circumstances. And we had the added benefit of getting to spend some time with a great friend!

Thanks Carrie, for saving our rolls, and letting us invade your house on such short notice!

We looked at our old oven, it was not a deluxe model. In fact it was one of the cheaper versions available 30 years ago when our house was built. It cooked really hot, so hot that I usually had to reduce the temperature by 25 to 50 degrees and it still took less cooking time than was called for! I learned to watch everything closely or I would end up with a burnt mess. This was the second time in less than two years that the element had burnt out for no apparent reason. We debated just buying another new element and seeing how long this one would last or investing in a whole new unit. We have been wanting to update our kitchen ever since we moved in, and even though a full blown remodel is still years in the future we decided to just go for it and get the oven that we have been wanting.

We hit a couple of stores to see what was available. Sears had a good selection (and sales!) and also knowledgeable salespeople. We looked and discussed models, looked some more, browsed the store while thinking it over (where I found the cutest sweater on clearance for $8!) and finally went back to place our order. The salesman punched the code of the oven we had chosen into the computer. It would not be in stock for 2 weeks! He looked at some other models, every single one of them was either not available at all or at least a 2 week wait. We had really been hoping to have a new one within a couple of days, now we were looking at a two week wait. How hard could it be, right? We had our grill and the stove top still worked, we decided we were willing to wait the two weeks. To make it up to us the salesman was able to get us an oven two models up from the one we had originally been looking at, for the same price! WooHoo!!!

We really missed having an oven for two weeks, but we didn't starve. In fact, we may have put on a few pounds!

I was not one bit sad to see that ugly old oven go.

I love my pretty new oven! I am almost inspired to do some baking.

  • He Lives! He Lives!

Easter Day was a beautiful spring day. Still a little cool, but a nice break from the winter weather that we just can't seem to get rid of. Our day started with an early morning. We didn't make it to the Sunrise Service at church but we were there in time for breakfast and after that the Easter Service. After church we spent the day at the home of some wonderful friends where we ate way too much and enjoyed watching the kids have a Easter Egg Hunt.

I made Audrey's Easter Dress this year. It is something I have always wanted to do, but really didn't seem necessary. There are so many beautiful dresses at the stores that it has just been easier to buy one. But then at Christmas it was hard to find a dress I liked that was not ridiculously over-priced, and as I started looking for an Easter dress I realized that I could do better. Seriously, why is it that the stores think that a five year old needs to dress like they are 16, actually most of the clothes aren't even appropriate for a 16 year old.  And try finding white shoes that don't have heels! She is 5, not 20! She is going to be running and playing in these shoes, why on earth would she need heels???? Ok, I'll stop my ranting.

Here are a few pictures from our day:

I will leave you with the words to one of my favorite hymns to sing this time of year. Egg hunts and Easter baskets are fun, but let's not forget the real reason for the day!

    I serve a risen Saviour,
    He's in the world today;
I know that He is living,
    Whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him
    He's always near.

    Chorus:
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives
    today!
He walks with me and He talks with me
    Along life's narrow way.
He lives, He live, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives:
    He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me
    I see His loving care,
And tho my heart grows weary
    I never will despair;
I know that He is leading
    Thro' all the stormy blast,
    The day of His appearing
    Will come at last.

    Chorus:
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives
    today!
He walks with me and He talks with me
    Along life's narrow way.
He lives, He live, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives:
    He lives within my heart.

    Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
Lift up your voice and sing
    Eternal hallelujahs
    To Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him,
The help of all who find,
    None other is so loving,
    So good and kind.

    Chorus:
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives
    today!
He walks with me and He talks with me
    Along life's narrow way.
He lives, He live, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives:
    He lives within my heart.

  • What We Have Been Up To

It has been a long time since I have been on here. We have had a couple really busy weeks, including a week when my parents were here visiting from Michigan.

Here is what we have been up to...

Brian painted Audrey's fingernails. He made me promise that this picture wouldn't end up on facebook.  So of course I kept my promise and put it here instead. Yes, he really is using a sock to keep his pants clean. Please, please, please ignore the junk under the bed. This was really just too funny to resist.

Lincoln has been spending a lot of time rolling around on the floor. He thinks it is grand and who am I to tell him otherwise?

We had some beautiful weather last week so we tried to spend as much time outside as possible. Carter was so excited to go out that he didn't wait for me to help him with his coat. He was so proud of himself and couldn't understand what the problem was.

    Ahhhhh, sunshine!!!!

We had a great time playing outside. Doesn't Carter look funny here? He absolutely loves this hat. He wears it all day long. I think he would even sleep with it if we let him.

Audrey found a different hat to model. This is my dad's hat.  I think all the grandkids have had it on at one point or another.

Grandparents always come bearing gifts and this one came at just the right time. Audrey loved her new umbrella and it came in pretty handy with the rain we were having.

We even took a day and did some shopping. We hit the outlets (sorry, no pictures, just lots of good deals) and then spent a few hours at Cabela's. Audrey loved their shooting gallery.

Carter had his eye on other things. He thought this bike was just right for him, after all it is just a bigger version of his at home.

After all that running around we were happy to spend a few days at home.
    Lincoln relaxing in his jammies.

Brian and my Dad finished the crown molding in our family room. I didn't even take a picture of it, but I did get one of Carter in his new favorite spot. He has no fear at all, and I often find him on top of things.

Audrey and Grandma did quite a bit of baking. They made two kinds of cookies and home-made bread. And then Grandma and Papa went home and left all those goodies for us to eat. My waist-line was not too happy about that.

Here they are working on the bread.

    Her very own loaf!

Lincoln was sitting on the floor playing and the kids sat down next to him in a nice little row, so of course I ran for my camera!

Audrey and Carter all dressed up for church. Why do they always look like they are lined up for the firing squad?

Woohoo! I finally got a picture with Brian and Lincoln! Aren't they cute?

  • A Quick Post

We have had a few Doctor's appointments lately. I finally got around to doing Carter's 2 year well check (only 2 months late!) and Lincoln's 6 month well-check (Only a month late!). The boys are both doing great, Carter didn't even cry when he got his shots! It was a miracle!

Lincoln's weight at 7 months is 22 lbs 6 oz.

Carter's weight at 2 years is 24 lbs 5 oz.

Here are some pictures from a couple of weeks ago before church.
I don't know why Audrey has this cheesy, fake smile.

Lincoln is sitting up really well. I just keep the pillow there because sometimes he forgets that he can't lean back and then...BOOM!

Carter wouldn't join them on the couch. Apparently Lincoln thought that was hilarious!
